In-Dash CD Player

Sony In-Dash CD Player (CDX-M9900) (CDX-M9900)

Sony's CDX-M9900 is an automotive CD/tuner head unit built to 21st-century standards, offering everything from MP3 CD playback to preamplifier audio outputs to XM Satellite and CD/minidisc changer compatibility. Use it by itself to drive up to 4 (front/rear) speakers, or use it as a preamp to feed an optional high-power amplifier for heavier-duty audio needs.

The CDX-M9900 permits external source video playback on its 32,000-color TFT display while providing the ability to capture up to 100 still images from the video input for use as custom screen-savers. Whether it's your favorite bands, your car, your home, your spouse, or your kids, your stereo system will reflect your personality, your tastes.

When you're ready to enjoy XM Satellite radio--a paid subscription radio service with over 100 digitally broadcast channels of commercial-free music--just activate your service, hook up an XM tuner and antenna, and you'll be able to use your CDX-M9900 to switch between standard radio stations and your digital XM service, with no additional dash space required for an XM controller.

The built-in amplifier pumps 23 watts per channel x 4 (52 wpc x 4 peak power) into 4-ohm speakers for clear, full-bodied sound at high and low listening levels. New to this model, the head unit includes a revised CD playback mechanism and power chip called "Drive-S," whose key benefit is improved sound quality alongside an impressive 120 dB signal-to-noise ratio.

Audio processing options abound. DSO is a proprietary circuit that subtly phase shifts the preamp output of the head unit's left and right channels to simulate a sound source that's vertically high in origin. It alters the frequency response in a section of the sound to further enhance the perception that the sounds are originating from a physically higher source. This effectively raises the sound stage above the dashboard, even if the speakers are mounted low in the doors.

EQ7 is a built-in equalization circuit providing--you guessed it--7 bands of frequency level adjustments stored in 7 user-adjustable presets. Here to optimize the sound from your CD-borne MP3 files is BBE MP processing, which integrates BBE High Definition Sound with BBE's MP harmonic restoration. The MP process was developed to improve MP3 sound by restoring upper harmonics lost during PCM-to-MP3 conversion. The MP process adds perceived warmth and provides clear sound from heavily compressed MP3 material.

A built-in subwoofer crossover and level control let you optimize the system for use with an external powered subwoofer for door-crushing bass when the situation warrants.

For the tuner, you'll enjoy 18 FM and 12 AM station presets, as well as SSIR-EXA tuning. SSIR-EXA adjusts the tuner's bandwidth depending on environmental conditions to ensure the clearest reception from any location.
